Political cartoons such as this one were instrumental during World War I. Many of the decisions that people made during this period had to do with their inner sense of patriotism. During these years, patriotism was one of the most prised traits that a person could exemplify. With this in mind, many of the posters and political cartoons had some connection to red, white, and blue. This cartoon, similarly to many others, used Uncle Sam as a symbol of America. Uncle Sam was seen as quintessentially American and therefore a perfect choice to persuade a patriotic population that everyone was needed to assist in the war, whether they were fighting overseas or simply working on the home front. If Uncle Sam said it, it was a good as done by the American people. This was the first major war in which the entire population was called upon to help in some way and the result was overwhelming. https://sites.google.com/site/wartoendallwarscom/home/industry-during-ww1
